When a person practices yoga or pilates, he or she does so on a surface able to withstand the demands the practitioner will need from it. As such, the surface must be soft enough to cushion the body, but firm enough to withstand the forces a yoga or pilates practitioner will exert upon it. A yoga mat must also be tough enough to be used for a long time, and it must also be priced within anyones' reach.
Traditional floor mats simply cushion the body; providing a good place to sit, lay back and relax. However, these types of mats were not designed to support one's body during intensive and physically-demanding sessions of yoga.
